New online resource for planning

I am pleased to announce that we now have online access to the Development Control Practice resource or DCP Online for short.

We currently take the print version of this in the library which is reference only, so I hope the enhanced access to online will be helpful for students accessing remotely.

To access it you just enter Development Control Practice in to Books journals and more search tab, click on the online access tab and then Go next to Miscellaneous E-journals.

Trying to find images and film content but don't know where to start?

 

If you find yourself asking any of the above then why not come along to our drop-in sessions where we can help you access and use a wealth of resources to help you succeed and excel in your studies.

 

The sessions are all designed so that you can drop-in between 12pm and 3pm to get answers to your questions and see live demonstrations - you can stay for however little or long you need.  All sessions will take place in the Library Training Room in the North Area, 1st floor.

How to research your assignment

Having trouble researching your assignment, take a look at this helpful multimedia guide produced by some library colleagues.

It breaks up doing your research into three stages, advising on keyword selection, where to look for the information and useful search techniques to try out.

You will find lots of books in the library and online which will help with doing your research too, try looking on Library Search for topics on research and library skills, critical thinking and study skills.

NBS TV Video

A new development ready for the academic year is that NBS (National Building Specifications), have made NBS TV free to air for the rest of the year!

It may be a good source for background research before delving into journals and books; it is an innovative way of research from reliable sources.

Downloading & converting maps

Following on from some library sessions yesterday regarding converting maps in Digimap to alternative formats such as DWG or DXF files and particularly for Mac users, the following information may provide some assistance:
Converting OS mastermap to CAD format for use in AutoCAD or other design applications
Interspose software

Also for Mac users the latest version of AutoCAD Map3D will read GML files directly which you can then convert to other formats. Get a free copy of AutoCAD by visiting this AutoCAD site, just register with a valid .ac.uk email and download what you want.

For data outside of the UK you may be able to go to each of the countries and check whether they have similar mapping organisations like OS in GB that are making their products freely available for everyone to reuse under the governments open data agenda , you could also try the following:
Accessing data outside UK (free spatial data and imagery can be accessed through registration)
GoGeo international (map & spatial data beyond UK)

Updates to Historic Digimap

I have recieved notification that on the evening of the 1st March there will be updates to historical maps in Digimap, the changes will only affect the Scottish county series maps and tis will mean that some maps will appear to move decade.

Any changes should result in an improvement to the accuracy of the dates of the maps affected, more informationabout the changes and implications can be accessed on the Digimap site

Digimap - maintenance

The MasterMap facility in Digimap will be unavailable due to maintenance work:

MasterMap Download will be unavailable from 4pm on Friday 4 February until 12 noon on Monday 7 February and will continue to be at risk for the remainder of Monday 7th.

While the maintenance work may be completed over the weekend, there is further software maintenance to be undertaken. Currently it is difficult to estimate the length of time this will take, which is why MasterMap Download should be regarded as "at risk" for the remainder of Monday 7th February.
