New Journal titles

We now have electronic access to two new titles available from Bloomsbury Publishing and listed in Library Search:

The journal of Home Cultures is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the critical understanding of the domestic sphere, its artefacts, spaces and relations, across timeframes and cultures. 'Home' is a highly fluid and contested site of human existence that reflects and reifies identities and values. In this context Home Cultures explores the relationship between body and building, consumption, material culture, the meaning of home, moving cultures and social consequences of planning and architecture.

The Senses & Society journal provides a crucial forum for the exploration of this vital new area of inquiry. Peer-reviewed and international, it brings together ground-breaking work in the humanities and social sciences and incorporates cutting-edge developments in art, design, and architecture. Every volume contains something for and about each of the senses, both singly and in all sorts of novel configurations.

Help with locating architectural information in print journals

We have a wealth of information relating to architects and their projects and buildings, a lot of this information is held within our print collection of architectural related journals on the third floor of the library.  Unless you have been given a specific reference to where information has been published it can be difficult to trace this information via Library Search, as information in print journals that are not available electronically are not indexed.

I usually use and suggest the RIBA catalogue for tracing this type of content, as they do index their print journal collection.  You can then cross reference with the journal titles that we hold to find the relevant information.  I have created a short clip to demonstrate how you can use the RIBA catalogue to this effect:

Postmodernism

I recently visited the Postmodernism exhibition at the V&A which encompassed all the arts including architecture including Charles Jencks's writings and theories on postmodernism.

Displayed as part of the exhibition for the New wave period in the 1980's were copies of the publication Domus which was a important method to deliver news about what was happening at that stage of the movement.  We subscribe to Domus in the library where print copies can be found dating from 1963 to current day so if you are interested in reading more about the movement as it was percieved then why not take a browse of the 1980's range (if you are not sure where/how to locate please let me know).

In relation to this there is also a recent article in The Architectural Review, Vol 1377, November 2011 pgs 112-117 "Reassessing Postmodernism is the movement still relevant 50 years on?" by Colin Fournier - we also subscribe to this journal in print.

Journal title highlight of the month

I thought it may be useful to draw to your attention some of the journal titles that you may find of interest and valuable in your research and study.

The journal title I have chosen this month is The Journal of Architecture it is jointly published by the RIBA & Routledge. There are a range of issues which have a range of themes and subjects including individual architects, design theory, architectural culture, sustainability, everyday building and many more. There are also book and exhibition reviews included regularly.

You can access the title via infoLinx, select the tab 'Find e-Journal' and type the title into the search box at the top and use 'Go' to retrieve the list of matching results. Remember that if you are accessing the title off campus select the i button to check whether you will need a username & password to access.

Personally I find this title a great resource especially when researching subjects which have a historical context such as architectural movements which continue to influence contemporary developments.
